Performance Testing without load modelling

So for a few years now I’ve held the view that good performance testing relies on good upfront analysis in the form of load modelling. That is, simplisticly, understanding what users are likely to be doing in the live environment and using that as a basis for the test, either through empirical data or a bit of guesswork. However, I now increasingly see people getting involved in performance testing that is what you might describe as point and click. Automation of some scenarios and ramp it up for a while...
